The Blue Jays prospect allowed a run on four hits and struck out six over five innings in his Class A debut Wednesday as the Lansing Lugnuts shut down the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 4-1.
Syndergaard ran into trouble in the second, allowing a one-out single to Robbie Price, who stole second and scored on a base hit by Keith Castillo.
After retiring Nicholas Schwaner on a fly ball to left field, Syndergaard gave up another single to Robi Estrada and walked Kevin Kiermaier to load the bases. But he retired Cody Rogers on a grounder to first base to end the inning.
Selected 38th overall by the Blue Jays out of high school in Texas last year, Syndergaard has climbed quickly through the organization. He opened the year in the Rookie-level Appalachian League, going 4-0 with a 1.41 ERA in seven appearances for Bluefield. He moved up to the short-season Northwest League, where he fanned 22 over 18 innings and was 1-2 with a 2.00 ERA.
Syndergaard, who throws a fastball in the mid-90s, a curveball and a changeup, made his pro debut last season in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League and was 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in five starts.
Dustin Antolin (3-2) allowed two hits and fanned three over two scoreless innings to earn the win. Daniel Webb was perfect over the final two frames to notch his first save.
Markus Brisker and Matt Nuzzo each drove in a pair of runs for the Lugnuts, who got two hits from Jake Marisnick, Toronto's No. 6 prospect.
